Connecticut's attorney general threatened Wednesday to sue the New York Racing Association over plans to allow online betting
on New York horse races.

The New York State Racing and Wagering Board last week approved plans for the gambling Web site, which Blumenthal said would initially take bets over the Internet from gamblers in Connecticut and New York.

The launch of the site, the first of its kind in New York, was to coincide with Wednesday's season opening of New York's Belmont Park.

``This precedent would be extraordinarily dangerous if permitted,'' Blumenthal said. ``We intend to stop it. We will take any appropriate action in court if necessary and we hope that the wagering board, the
wagering authority in New York, will revoke approval.''

Racing association spokeswoman Maria Diaz said it had no immediate comment on Connecticut's action. She said a statement was expected Wednesday afternoon.

Blumenthal said New York could fix the problem by simply barring wagers from Connecticut. He said the racing association had not yet responded to letters from his office and the Connecticut Division of Special Revenue.
