Week 9

Sunday
Chiefs (4-3) @ Rams (4-3)-Chiefs won four of last five games, scoring 30,35 in last two; they averaged 6.0+ yards per pass attempt in their four wins (4.2/5.5/4.4 in losses). Rams allowed 6.2+ yds/pass in five of last six games. St Louis has 14 takeaways in its four wins (+12 turnover ratio), two in its three losses (-2); Ram offense has been good enough to win, but defense doesn't force many punts (26th in NFL in forced 3/outs), allowing 20+ first downs in each of last five games. Chiefs scored 13 TDs in 42 drives at home, but only three in 35 on road (lost two of three on foreign soil).

Bengals (4-3) @ Ravens (5-2)- Bengals' last three games were all decided by three or less points, but Cincy lost three of last four games, with no INTs in last four games- they scored 30 ppg in winning last three games vs. Ravens, and won their last two visits to this site, after having lost previous seven. Three of last four series totals in Baltimore were 44+. Ravens scored TDs on last five red zone drives; they allowed 23,22 points in their losses, are 4-1 allowing 14 or less points. Bengals are moving the chains, converting 60 for last 132 on third down (45.5%); they're 4-1 if they score 17+ points.

Texans (2-5) @ Giants (5-2)-Red-hot Giants 4-0 since their bye, with all four wins by 13+ points; in second half of their last six games, they outscored foes 111-36. In their last two home games, Giants allowed no TDs on 22 drives, forcing 13 3/outs. Houston is 2-5, with four losses by 14+ points; they yanked Carr for Rosenfels last week, and the backup sparked a Texan rally, so will be interesting to see if team rallies around Carr here- they ran ball for 140 yds/game last two weeks, after averaging 67.6 ypg in first five. Texans upset Giants 16-14 in Houston four years ago, in teams' only previous meeting.

Titans (2-5) @ Jaguars (4-3)- Can Titans score 20+ points? Jaguars allowed 21,36,27 points in their three losses, a total of 23 in their four wins. Jags are 3-0 at home, winning by 7,9,41 points; their defense allowed three TDs in last 33 drives over last three games. After 0-5 start, Titans scored 25,28 points in winning last two; they lost here 40-13 LY, their first loss in last four visits to Alltel, in series where visitor is 5-3 SU in last eight meetings. Jags have no takeaways in last two games, but won in Philly with backup QB Garrard playing. Titans have four TDs on last 22 drives, after having six in first 55.

Cowboys (4-3) @ Redskins (2-5)- Washington lost last three games, giving up 153 rushing yards/game, with no takeaways- they allowed 61 points in last two games. Skins are 0-5 if they score less than 31 pts. Cowboys allowed 14 or less pts in their wins, 24-38-36 in losses. Dallas (-6.5) won first meeting 27-10 in penalty-filled Week 2 game, their 14th win in last 18 games vs. this rival; Redskins were 2-14 on third down, got outrushed 138-93, and had no offensive TDs in 11 drives, with six 3/outs. If you wager halftime lines, know that in last five Dallas games, average of 31.6 second half pts were scored.

Packers (3-4) @ Bills (2-5)- Home side won seven of last eight series games, as Green Bay has never won (0-4) in Buffalo, losing by 7-28-9-9 points, but last visit here was '00. Packers scored 31,34,31 pts in their wins, average 14 peg in losses; they're 3-1 if game goes over total, 0-3 if it doesn't. Buffalo lost last three games, scoring three TDs on 34 drives, with 17 3/outs and a -9 turnover ratio; they allowed 6,12 pts in their two wins, an average of 27 ppg in losses. In their last two games, with Green back at RB, Pack has outrushed their opponents 358-153, giving Favre some balance.

Saints (5-2) @ Bucs (2-5)-New Orleans going for first season sweep over Bucs since '02; in first meeting TY, New Orleans got outgained 406-314, but got punt return TD from Bush in fourth quarter to secure win, spoiling Gradkowski's first career start. Underdog is 4-0 vs. spread in Tampa home games, with last three decided by total of five points; they covered four of last five games, but averaged less than 4 yards/pass in each of last three. Bucs have no offensive TDs in last two games, gaining 196,174 total yards. This is first time Saints been on road in five weeks; they won two of first three on foreign soil.

Falcons (5-2) @ Lions (1-6)- Falcons allowed 30.7 ppg in last three games, won pair of shootouts (41-38/29-27) in last two, scoring eight TDs on last 24 drives and converting 15 of last 29 on third down. Detroit is 0-5 vs. spread when they allow more than 17 pts; they've lost field position battle in every game this year. Underdog is 3-0 vs. spread in Lion home games in '06. Atlanta (-3) outrushed Lions 256-75 on this field in Week 13 LY, beating Detroit 27-7, starting four of their 11 drives in Lion territory. Five of last six Detroit games went over total; Falcons are 3-0 if their game goes over total.

Dolphins (1-6) @ Bears (7-0)-Miami hasn't lost game by more than 11 points, but they're 0-4 on road, losing by 11,2,10,3 pts; not only is Miami 0-6-1 vs. spread in '06, they've only outscored opponent in two of 16 halves this season (2-12-2). Dolphins won both their visits to Windy City, but last one was in '91. Chicago won its four home games by average score of 38-8 (4-0 vs spread); they've +2 or better in turnovers every game but one (-4 in 24-23 win at Arizona), and outscored foes 131-32 in first half of games. In their last three games, Miami has minus-7 turnover ratio (2-9).

Vikings (4-3) @ 49ers (2-5)-Long trip west on short work week for Vikings, who lost last seven visits to Candlestick Point, in series where home side won last seven meetings. Minnesota averages just 5.7 ppg in first half of games, which is why they've led only one game at half, but they're facing Niner squad that allowed 89 pts in last two games, giving up 11 TDs on last 21 drives, with -7 turnover ratio. Vikings won two of three on road and have 15 sacks in last four games, but Niners are 2-0 if they don't lose turnover battle, so up to Tomlin's defense to create pressure, turnovers. Trap game for Minnesota.

Browns (2-5) @ Chargers (5-2)-San Diego is 3-0 at home, winning by 33,10,14 points, but are without star DE Merriman for next four weeks (steroids). San Diego offense has 13 TDs on last 31 drives, converted 24 of last 59 (40.7%) on third down and has outscored teams 74-27 in second half of last four games. In last three games, offensively-challenged Browns scored three TDs with 16 3/outs on 37 drives; they're 10 for last 42 on third down, and 1-3 vs. spread as underdog. Chargers won three of four series games, with Browns losing only previous visit here, 23-10 in '99. It is still less than two weeks since Browns fired offensive coordinator.

Broncos (5-2) @ Steelers (2-5)-Desperate time for fading Steeler squad facing team they beat in AFC title game LY (34-17); Denver is 5-3 in last eight visits to Steel City; they had five-game win streak snapped LW, but have still outscored last five opponents 50-9 in first half of games. Steeler defense allowed 98 yards on 49 plays LW in Oakland, but they still lost, since Raiders scored two defensive TDs. Pitt has lost field position battle in every game this year; they've allowed 71 points in last two games, and lost five of last six. Denver allowed 18,34 pts in their losses, a total of 26 in their wins.

Colts (7-0) @ Patriots (6-1)-Unbeaten Indy road dog second week in row, vs. Patriot squad that won six of last seven series games, taking nine of last ten played at this site (Colts won here 40-21 LY). Patriots scored 29.3 ppg in winning last four games, while allowing only two TDs on last 43 drives, holding last four foes under 14 points. Colts scored 34 last week at Denver squad that had allowed two TDs in six games; they scored 65 pts in second half of last three games. Expect Pats to run ball vs. Colt D that allowed four of seven foes to rush for 186+ yards. Six of last eight series totals were 51+.

Monday
Raiders (2-5) @ Seattle (4-3)-Oakland's defense has gotten lot better, allowing only two TDs on last 32 drives in wins over Cardinals, Steelers, while picking off six passes; add in 13-3 loss to Denver in last loss, and Raiders allowing just 11.7 ppg in last three games, so it is hot defense facing mobile QB Wallace, making second NFL start, first on home field. Seahawks allowed 32.2 ppg in last five games, yielding 18 TDs on last 56 drives, but they're 4-0 when giving up less than 31, and since Oakland gained total of 98 yards on 49 plays last week, hard to see them dropping 30 on Seattle.
