Trevor Lawrence does not sound like someone who is plotting a way to avoid coming to the Jets.
The Clemson quarterback and projected No. 1 pick appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Wednesday and Patrick asked him directly about the Jets. At 0-13, the Jets are in position to land the No. 1 pick and a shot at Lawrence. The Jets look like they will finish 0-16, which would guarantee the top draft spot.
There has been speculation that Lawrence might return to Clemson for his senior season or say he is not going to come to the Jets and try to force a trade, like Eli Manning did in 2004.
Patrick asked Lawrence whether he feels like he is prepared to join a team like the Jets.
“I think I’m ready,” Lawrence said. “I think just being here at Clemson, my journey has taught me a lot. I’ve grown up a lot the past few years. I’m really just ready to take on whatever challenge it is and just have that opportunity.”
Patrick then asked if Lawrence has watched the Jets.
“I haven’t really, honestly. I’ve seen some highlights and stuff,” he said.
After Patrick jokingly told him he shouldn’t watch the Jets, Lawrence explained that he embraces a challenge.
“Honestly, I know some of the stuff I say sounds cliché but just to have the opportunity to go somewhere, help someone rebuild if that’s what it is or whatever and just win,” Lawrence said. “That’s something I love doing. I think that’s what I’m best at is winning, regardless of stats, whatever it is. That’s what I love. Just to have that chance, obviously some places it will be more of a challenge than others, but I think I’m up for it. That will get here when it’s here. I’m trying to focus now on being great where I’m at.”
Lawrence recently participated in Clemson’s Senior Day activities, which fueled the belief he is entering the NFL Draft after the season ends. Patrick asked Lawrence if he was definitely entering the draft.
“I mean it’s likely,” Lawrence said. “I don’t want to completely shut any door.”
